Toni is the type of person to immediately make you feel at home with simply her smile. She is determined in her work and caring in her demeanor. For her 65th birthday she treated the entire office to lunch, cake, and a story told by the wonderful Linda Schuyler Ford. We are so thankful for the work Toni does as the Health & Wellness Program Assistant here at the Senior Center and for the friendship that she offers to all of her coworkers!

We loved getting to celebrate Vivian Sherlock's 99th birthday with her! Happy birthday Vivian and thank you for being one of our Silver Stars!
The Tallahassee Senior Center was excited to play host to the Transit is Golden event. On June 19th we joined forces with Star Metro, Florida Public Transportation Association, Florida's Safe Mobility for Life Coalition, Alert Today Alive Tomorrow, and Florida Department of Transportation to celebrate the national Dump the Pump day. The morning began with presentations regarding safe transportation and available transportation resources for seniors. Afterwards the participants together took the bus to the capital for lunch and a guided tour.
We were so excited to be able to participate in the CARES event at South City this June. CARES, Creating Awareness of Resources and Educational Services, was hosted at Greater Love Church of God in Christ and brought together local agencies and organizations to educate the community regarding the services they provide. The Tallahassee Senior Center and Foundation was very honored to be apart of such a relevant and influential event!
The Tallahassee Senior Foundation was recently awarded a grant from the Capital City Bank Group Foundation. This generous award will go to help fund the Senior Center's Lunch Bunch program. With the help of this funding the Lunch Bunch program will be able to continue to offer monthly educational field trips for low-income seniors. These outings provide educational experiences for seniors and opportunities for them to be involved in their surrounding community.
We are so incredibly grateful to the Capital City Bank Group Foundation for their support! A few members of our staff helped organize an ice cream social at the Fort Braden Community Center. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with treats, face painting, and even a drum circle! There was a wonderful turn out from exhibitors and many members of the surrounding community. Thank you to everyone who participated!
The Fort Braden Community Center is located in an historic school house and the renovations are absolutely beautiful. It is well worth the trip for a visit, I most definitely enjoyed it! A big thank you to Marqueth for sharing these photographs from our last Southside Senior Day. It is a wonderful event and appears to have had a great showing!
Last month our wonderful intern Marqueth Williams joined a group from the Tallahassee Senior Center who participated in the Emancipation Day celebrations at the John G. Riley House. Marqueth was kind enough to share some of the photographs she took of the event for me to post here!
Thanks to two wonderful FSU students Lauren Chiato and Spencer Frankeberger, we can now show you just how much fun we have at the Senior Center. This video put to the tune of Pharrell William's Happy showcases many of our wonderful employees, volunteers, participants, and classes. This week we shared the video during lunch at the center and it brought even more smiles to everyone's faces! On May 22nd the Tallahassee Senior Center hosted its annual Silver Stars banquet to award nine of our outstanding volunteers with their own Silver Star Awards. Rose Blackburn, Jean Coyne, Fred and Margarete Deckert, James Ford, Charles Hazelip, Tadako Knight, Vivian Sherlock, and the late Theodore "Ted" Judd were awarded. These nine volunteers have shown unwavering dedication to the city of Tallahassee and the senior center. We are forever grateful for the work they have done to support the senior citizens of our city. As a new intern at the Tallahassee Senior Center, the Silver Stars banquet provided me a beautiful glimpse into the heart of this agency. This is a place were participants become volunteers and volunteers stay for 10, 15, even 20 years! The Senior Center has made such an impact on the lives of senior citizens in our community that they in turn have dedicated their time and services back to the center. It truly was an incredible event made a reality by the hard work of the Tallahassee Senior Service's employees. I was thankful for the opportunity to learn more about the Senior Center and all of the wonderful volunteers who were honored that night! |
